Heavy machinery is an expensive and valuable business asset, and the last thing you want is for it to get damaged during transit. There is the inconvenience of making an insurance claim, the depreciation which means you won’t recover the full value anyway, and delays to whichever project you needed it for at the other end. However, most shipments go smoothly, and all that is necessary is careful planning.
The best shipping option will depend on whether the equipment to transport has wheels and can be driven directly onto a ship. If so, then RORO – Roll-on-Roll-off- is advisable as it will be quicker and less expensive, as long as the port of destination is able to accommodate it.
Machines with delicate parts which could get damaged during transport, such as pumps or compressors, will benefit from being shipped in containers, where they will get extra protection.
Your equipment will also have to comply with various regulations. Depending on its weight and size, you may need to obtain special permits for it to be allowed on the roads of the country of destination for example. In addition, when it comes to importing it into New Zealand, it will undergo an MPI inspection which will check whether it is free of organic material which could otherwise contaminate the country’s environment. If it isn’t, it will be cleaned and re-inspected before it is released from the port, which would cause delays and extra costs.
Shipping heavy machinery can be problem free as long as you follow the right procedures. Make sure that your freight-forwarder has specific experience in that area.
