Two years after the terrible earthquake which destroyed large areas of Christchurch and claimed the lives of 185 people, parts of the city are still cordoned off.
Christchurch’s residents who have gone through it will no doubt greet the arrival of the T-Rex. A high-tech vehicle, this gigantic 30-tonne machine, dubbed the “T-Rex” because of its size and power, thumps the ground, simulating the vibrations caused by quakes of various magnitudes. They are then read by sensors which map out the underground topography to a depth of 250 metres, highlighting natural weaknesses and strengths.
This machine could help urban planning, influencing the design of buildings and outlining which areas will be particularly vulnerable to tremors.
It has been McCullough’s privilege to ship the T-Rex from Texas in the US to its new home in New Zealand. A specialist in international vehicle freight-forwarding, exports and imports, McCullough are also experienced at handling the shipping of heavy machinery and their specific requirements.
“We’re absolutely delighted that we’ve been able to use our vast experience of shipping vehicles to New Zealand to make this important life-saving work possible.”, said Daniel Hepburn of McCullough Ltd.
It is expected that T-Rex will be used at 15 sites throughout Christchurch, with testing beginning on 11 March, and if, like us, you find this giant oddly fascinating, you will have the chance to see it in action at QEII Park from March 14th, and at Ilam Fields on March 21st.
